Reasoning Together

Here you will find commentary addressing issues we face as a society.  My plea is that we don’t tune out others who disagree with us, or shut them down through vitriol.  The only way to solve problems is to discuss them respectfully and work with each other.  That means listening–really listening–to all viewpoints, and being willing to compromise to find resolutions.  That’s why I echo the invitation issued by the One I love: “Come, let us reason together.”

Trump, Christians, & Deception

Posted on Jan 19th, 2017 - By Penni L Smith - 0 Comments

I started writing this mentally back on November 12, and since then, I have gone over it dozens of times in my mind. It seems far too late to post it now, but I have not been able to let it go. So I am writing this and putting it out there. I welcome civil comments that will contribute to everyone’s understanding. I believe that a large number of Americans identify themselves as Christians because they believe in God and are not Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, or some other faith, not because they follow Jesus as their Lord. These, I thought, must be the "Christians" that polls showed voted for Donald Trump. Then I was hit by reality–some people I knew to be genuine believers said they voted for him. How could that be? Have We Forgotten the Gospel?

Posted on Aug 26th, 2015 - By Penni L Smith - 0 Comments

I’m very concerned that many Christians do not know what the gospel is. Few things are more powerful than truth. Yet those who seem most passionate about Truth often treat it as a weakling that must be protected and pushed. Their very actions serve to cripple Truth, making it harder for Truth to prevail. Is There Truth? Some people believe there is no absolute Truth, that everything is relative, subjective. They say things like, "Well, that may be true for you, but it’s not for me." Indeed, there are personal conditions for which that statement is actually right, but they err in thinking there are no universal truths. They are confusing absolute Truth with our finite beliefs and opinions. What is Truth? Truth is reality, fact. The challenge is that we have limited knowledge about many things, and often…

Two Meanings of Marriage

Posted on Mar 28th, 2013 - By Penni L Smith - 2 Comments

The news coverage this week has centered on the arguments before the Supreme Court in two cases concerning gay marriage. I understand the concerns on both sides, and the seemingly intractable division between them. Yet the matter could so easily be cleared up if we recognized that there are really two types of marriage, and we should address them differently. Certainly marriage is a spiritual issue. How that is seen will vary based on one’s beliefs, but people of all faiths agree that marriage is something unique, a relationship like no other, with spiritual ramifications. Marriage is also a legal entity. Marriage comes with certain benefits and obligations that are governed by law. Much of this has to do with financial commitment…
